On-Page SEOKeyword Research & Intent Mapping

Mapping Keywords to Every Stage of the Buyer Journey

Most keyword lists get built around search volume alone, which produces a lopsided content library: plenty of top-of-funnel blog traffic and almost nothing that actually converts. Mapping keywords to buyer journey stages fixes this by making sure every stage of the funnel has dedicated, intent-matched content working for it.

Awareness stage: problem-focused keywords

At this stage searchers don't yet know your product category exists as a solution - they're describing a symptom or problem, like "why is my website traffic dropping" rather than "best SEO audit tool." Content here should educate broadly and avoid a hard sell; the goal is to earn trust and capture the visitor into an email list or related-content chain, not to close a sale.

Consideration stage: solution-comparison keywords

Once a searcher understands the problem, they start researching categories of solutions: "how to improve website speed," "types of link building strategies." This is where in-depth guides, frameworks, and "how to choose" content perform best. These pages should introduce your product or service naturally as one credible option among the solutions discussed, without abandoning the educational tone.

Decision stage: comparison and validation keywords

Here searchers are evaluating specific options: "[competitor] vs [your product]," "[tool] reviews," "[tool] pricing." These keywords carry lower volume but the highest conversion intent of any stage. Comparison pages need to be scrupulously honest about trade-offs - a page that only flatters your own product reads as biased and erodes the trust built during earlier stages.

Post-purchase / retention keywords

An often-skipped stage: existing customers search too, for things like "[product] tutorial," "[product] not working," or "[product] alternatives to X feature." Covering these keywords with help-center content and tutorials reduces churn and support load while still counting as organic SEO value. For a deeper look at this, see our guide, Content Strategy.

Building the map

Create a simple spreadsheet with columns for keyword, search volume, funnel stage, and existing/planned content. Audit your current content against it - most sites discover they have five times more awareness-stage content than decision-stage content, which is usually backwards from where the actual revenue opportunity sits.
