Writing Title Tags for Ecommerce Product Pages at Scale

Ecommerce sites face a unique title tag challenge: writing genuinely distinct, compelling titles by hand for thousands of product pages simply isn't realistic, but a rigid template applied uniformly across the entire catalog often produces titles that feel robotic and under-optimized.

Build a smart template, not a static one

Rather than a fixed string like "[Product Name] | [Brand] | [Site Name]" applied identically everywhere, build a template with conditional logic: include size or color only for products where that's the differentiating attribute, include the model number for electronics but not for apparel, and vary word order based on category to avoid every single title looking identical in structure.

Prioritize the attribute customers actually search for

For most product categories, customers search brand plus product type first ("Nike running shoes"), then narrow with specific attributes. Front-load the title with the attributes that match actual search behavior for that category rather than defaulting to internal SKU-style naming.

Handle variant and duplicate content carefully

Color and size variants of the same core product often generate near-duplicate title tags and content. Decide upfront whether variants get their own indexable URLs with distinct titles (better when variants have meaningfully different search demand) or get consolidated under a canonical parent product page (better when they don't).

Watch length across the whole catalog

Brand names, category paths, and boilerplate suffixes eat into your character budget fast at scale. Audit a sample of generated titles with a spreadsheet formula checking character length, and adjust the template if a meaningful percentage exceed the 60-character display limit. Test template changes before rolling out site-wide

Because ecommerce title templates apply to potentially thousands of URLs at once, a flawed change can tank click-through rate across the entire catalog simultaneously. Roll out template changes to a representative sample category first and monitor click-through rate in Search Console before applying sitewide.
